The Arma are the descendants of the members of the Moroccan army that invaded the Songhai empire in 1591 and settled in the Niger bend after their victory. “Arma”, a name given to them by other groups, derives from the firearms used by their ancestors. Their family names are often Touré, which was originally a religious title taken by the Moroccan governors that spread to become a very common family name in Mali and Guinea.
