Not to be confused with the Dyula or the Dyola (Biafada) people.

The Jola have managed, despite the influence of Islam or Christianity, to safeguard their traditions, whether it be in Casamance, Senegal where they predominate, or in the Gambia or Guinea-Bissau. The true name of these peoples, composed of several subgroups: i.e. Ajamat, Kassa, Fogni, Bluff, seems to be “Ajamat” or one of its variants: “Ajamaat”,”Adjamat” or “Adjamaat”, which means “human being” or “himself”.
