The Krio of Sierra Leone are descendants of black populations from London, Nova Scotia and Jamaica, as well as ‘Liberated Africans’ freed from slave ships intercepted on their way to the Americas. Like their Americo-Liberian neighbors in Liberia, the Krio have varying degrees of European ancestry and their language, Sierra Leonean Creole or Krio, is an English-based creole that has become the lingua franca of Sierra Leone.
