Famous for their skills in navigating and sailing the Atlantic, these indigenous Liberians migrated and settled along various points of the West African coast, notably in Sierra Leone, but also on the Ivorian and Nigerian coasts. The Kru’s expertise also spared them from the hulls of slave ships, where they were instead employed as valuable sailors, navigators and interpreters. Also interesting, Kru languages are known for some of the most complex tone systems in Africa.
