Sambla

Categories: Ethnicities

The Sambla live in 12 villages in the savanna region west of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso, between the Mandé and the Gur cultures. Integral to their identity is the baan, “the talking xylophone”, which transposes their highly complex tonal Mandé language, Seenku, into music. Children learn both simultaneously.
