The name “Songhai” was historically neither an ethnic nor linguistic designation, but a name for the ruling caste of the Songhai Empire. And although the language, society and culture of the Songhai, a people found throughout the Niger bend in Mali, is barely distinguishable from the Zarma, the two groups see themselves as distinct. Even Songhai languages are best considered as part of an independent language family.
