The Wolof people of northwestern Senegal, the Gambia and southwestern coastal Mauritania have historically maintained a rigid, endogamous social stratification that included nobility, clerics, castes and slaves and seamlessly became integrated into the French colonial administration, especially in Senegal, where they have dominated its culture and economy since independence.
