Ethno-linguists and anthropologists agree that all of the Yoruba groups are of Sudanic origins, eventually conquering the indigenous populations of the forested regions of Nigeria. This Niger-Congo ethnic group also can be found in Benin and Togo, collectively united under the cultural, linguistic designation: Yorubaland. All recognize Ife-Ife as their original city and the seat of the ancient Yoruba religion with a pantheon of hundreds of orishas.
